Major US Metros QOL
A descriptive, comparative study of quality-of-life indicators across major U.S. metropolitan areas. It characterizes how living standards differ from metro to metro, and it treats region as a contextual grouping variable rather than a causal factor.

An early-stage analysis. It uses metro-level demographic and well-being indicators from the BCHC and the U.S. Census ACS to compare quality of life across major U.S. metros and between regions. Region is a contextual grouping, not a causal factor. Findings will be reported with their uncertainty once the indicator index is built.

This project looks more closely at the quality of life that the largest metropolitan regions exhibit. The unit of analysis is the metro, and region is the grouping variable. The grouping is contextual, and it is not used to suggest causation.
Three questions guide the work. First, how does quality of life compare among major metros within the same region? Second, does aggregate quality of life differ meaningfully between regions, and if it does, is the difference driven by an outlier metro?
Third, if an outlier is responsible, how does the aggregate picture change once it is removed? Answering these questions gives a clear, high-level quantitative understanding of the standard at which everyday people across these metros live, and it lays the groundwork for more methodologically complex research.

- This is a descriptive, comparative study. Region is a contextual grouping variable, not a causal one, and no causal claims are made.
- Some indicators are missing data sources or confidence intervals for select cities across multiple years. The gap is systemic, so the affected entries are retained rather than imputed, and work that requires higher accuracy should reproduce the analysis with vetted, licensed data.
- Metro boundaries and indicator vintages vary by source, so the aggregates are intended for high-level intuition rather than precise ranking.
